What Activities Are Best for Bones?

Teen with a bicycle What about swimming and biking?

While swimming and bike riding are good for your daughter's health, they are not the best activities for building strong bones.

Why not? Because the water or bike actually bears your daughter's weight, so her bones aren't getting the impact of the activity. If you bike often as a family or your child is on a swim team, make sure she does plenty of bone-strengthening activities too.

These are examples of bone-strengthening activities, which improve muscle mass and strengthen bone:

Bone-Strengthening Activities

Badminton
Basketball
Cheerleading
Dancing
Hiking
Figure Skating
Gymnastics
Jogging
Jumping Rope
Karate
Running
Soccer
Softball
Tae Kwon Do
Tennis
Volleyball
Walking

Resistance activities that also help build strong bones include:

  • Using resistance bands
  • Weight training*

*Make sure to check with your daughter's doctor before she begins weight training to suggest an age-appropriate program.
